WHAT IS CAT NEUTERING AND SPAYING?

Cat neutering refers to the surgical removal of a cat's reproductive organs. In male cats, this is castration — a quick procedure removing both testicles under general anaesthetic. In female cats, this is spaying — the removal of the ovaries and uterus under GA. Both procedures are routine and widely recommended from around 4 months of age. Benefits include: prevention of unwanted litters; elimination of seasons (calling) in females; reduction of territorial spraying in males; significantly reduced risk of certain cancers; and prevention of FeLV and FIV transmission through fighting in outdoor cats. The UK has a significant stray and unwanted cat problem. Early neutering is one of the most important things you can do for cat welfare.

Cats can be neutered from around 4 months of age. Early neutering is recommended to prevent unwanted pregnancies — cats can become pregnant from their first season, which can occur as early as 4–5 months. Your Snoots vet will confirm the right timing at one of your kitten's early visits.
Yes. Cat neutering and spaying is included in every Snoots membership at £30/month — both male castration and female spaying, scheduled at the timing your vet recommends.
Microchipping is a legal requirement for cats in England from June 2024 and must be done by 20 weeks of age. It can be done at the same visit as neutering, or at an earlier appointment. Both are included in your Snoots membership.
Spaying eliminates the risk of pyometra (life-threatening uterine infection), significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer (especially if done before the first season), prevents FIV and FeLV transmission through mating, and eliminates the stress and risk of repeated pregnancies.
Neutering reduces behaviours driven by reproductive hormones — such as spraying in males and calling/roaming in females — but does not change a cat's fundamental personality. Most owners report their cat becomes calmer and more affectionate after neutering.
