WHAT IS A DOG DENTAL SCALE AND POLISH?

A dog dental scale and polish — also called a dental prophylaxis — is a professional cleaning procedure performed under general anaesthetic. It removes tartar and plaque buildup from the teeth and below the gum line, areas that cannot be reached with home brushing alone. The procedure typically includes: pre-anaesthetic blood tests to ensure your dog is fit for GA; induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia; full-mouth dental x-rays to identify disease below the gum line; ultrasonic scaling to remove tartar; polishing to smooth tooth surfaces and slow future buildup; and a comprehensive oral examination. Without regular dental cleaning, dogs are at high risk of periodontal disease, tooth loss, chronic pain and — importantly — bacteria entering the bloodstream and affecting the heart, kidneys and liver.

WHY DOES MY DOG NEED A GENERAL ANAESTHETIC?

Unlike humans, dogs cannot be instructed to stay still and open their mouths during a dental procedure. General anaesthetic allows your vet to safely clean every tooth, take x-rays, and identify and treat problems without causing distress. It also allows proper access to areas below the gum line — where the majority of dental disease occurs. At Snoots, GA dental procedures are included in every membership.

HOW OFTEN DOES MY DOG NEED THEIR TEETH CLEANED?

Most vets recommend annual professional dental cleaning for dogs, though some dogs — particularly smaller breeds — may benefit from more frequent cleaning. At Snoots, dental cleaning is included in your membership and can be scheduled whenever your vet recommends. There is no extra charge for additional procedures.

SMALL BREEDS

More prone to dental crowding and tartar buildup. Often benefit from cleaning every 6–12 months.

LARGE BREEDS

Generally less prone to tartar but still need annual cleaning. Dental x-rays can reveal hidden disease.

BRACHYCEPHALIC BREEDS

Flat-faced breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, Frenchies) have crowded teeth and are at higher risk. More frequent monitoring recommended.

Yes. Professional dog dental cleaning requires general anaesthetic. This allows safe access to all teeth and below the gum line, where most dental disease occurs, without causing distress. Anaesthetic-free dental cleaning is not recommended by the British Veterinary Dental Association as it cannot safely treat subgingival disease.
Most dogs benefit from professional dental cleaning annually. Small and brachycephalic breeds may need more frequent cleaning — every 6–12 months. Your Snoots vet will assess your dog's dental health at every wellness exam and recommend a schedule.
A dental scale and polish is a professional cleaning procedure performed under GA. It removes tartar and plaque from the teeth and below the gum line using ultrasonic scaling, followed by polishing to smooth the tooth surface. Full-mouth x-rays are taken to identify disease not visible to the naked eye. At Snoots, this complete procedure is included in every membership.
Common signs include bad breath, yellow or brown buildup on teeth, red or swollen gums, difficulty eating, pawing at the mouth, and loose or missing teeth. Many dogs show no obvious signs until dental disease is advanced — which is why regular professional cleaning and x-rays are important even when teeth appear healthy.
Yes. Full dental scale and polish with x-rays under general anaesthetic is included in every Snoots membership at £30/month. There is no additional charge for the procedure, the anaesthetic, or the x-rays.
